Over the past few days there’s been some frantic cackling in our chicken coop. Each time we’ve checked the laying boxes feeling sure we’d find an egg. Our hens will be 20 weeks old on the 23rd of this month so we’ve been feeling pretty hopeful we’d have early layers. This morning before I went to town for my final pre-Christmas shopping (I hope), I took food out to the chicken house and found a hen sitting sweetly on a nest. She was disturbed by my presence and vacated her spot. I thought then she looked like she was preparing to lay an egg. (I’m usually an optimist.) When I returned from a trip to town, I visited my chickens and found our first pullet egg! I’ve had a silly grin on my face ever since. It doesn’t take an awful lot to amuse some people.
Keep in mind pullet eggs are always very small…I figure that’s nature’s way of being very kind to an unsuspecting, first-time layer. If you’ve ever seen a hen lay an egg, you’ll likely agree.
Our first egg of many to come…good Lord willing.
Until next time…
