I’ve seen this done a few times and wondered if it really works. Even though chocolate cake is not part of my usual diet, I decided to test it.
5 Minute Mug Cake
1 coffee mug
4 TBL Sugar
4 TBL Flour
2 TBL Cocoa
tiny pinch of sea salt
1/8 tsp baking powder
1 egg
3 TBL Milk or Buttermilk
3 TBL Vegetable Oil
Spray inside of a large coffee mug with non-stick spray such as PAM. (The mug must hold at least 12 oz.) Add all dry ingredients. Mix well. Add wet ingredients and stir until well blended. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. Turn out onto a plate. Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle chocolate icing over it.
I made a drizzle frosting by mixing 2 tsp cocoa, 1/4 cup powdered sugar, a couple drops real vanilla extract and enough milk to make it a thick drizzling consistency.
Conclusion…
It works and tastes pretty good. Actually it tastes very good for the time and effort involved in making it. The next time my grands come to visit I’ll let them make their own individual mug cake for dessert.
Note: I used cake flour. It is lighter than regular flour. If using self-rising flour, omit baking powder and salt.
Until next time…

I gave the cake a try. It was actually pretty good. Very filling too. I wound up doing the icing without the cocoa, because I accidentally added too much milk and turned the first batch of icing into chocolate milk. :-p
mmmmmm…I bet chocolate milk would be pretty good with the cake.
I’m glad you tried it, Christina. It was a must try for me…just to see how well it worked.
The comment at the end is sooo very true!
Yes, my friend, it is…but hopefully we are ever learning to “let go and let Him”.
what a great i dea, my kids will love this, and ideal for those times when no every one wants pudding. TFS x
It is a novel idea…but my curiosity was satisfied. I’m sure I’ll let my grands do this but more for the fun of doing it and seeing the results than anything. The cake is good but not great by any means.
I have a little 4 year old that would absolutely love this….As a matter of fact I think all 4 of my kids would love it. I will give it a go and see, but if they see me eating it I am in trouble! I better just make us all one!
Suprina, sharing is likely a good idea, because one is more than enough for me. I expect one would be enough for at least two children unless they are very young in which case it would go even further.
This is a great hands on math project. Measuring and counting always combine well with cooking and baking.
Good to see you!
